Vinyl Cutter

Being creative is fun, we use our free time to work on something we love but for some people it can be one of their methods to make some money too. Just like with many other activities, we will need various tools to work with and while some of them are not extremely important, there are also few that should always be present in your collection. For those who can spend the budget, we recommend getting a vinyl cutter since they can be very useful for your convenience.

For those who are not familiar yet with a vinyl cutter, as the name suggests they are a cutting machine and are used to cut material that is thin sheet. Depending on the machine’s ability, the range or material such as the type and thickness or width can vary widely so it is never a guarantee that we can cut the same material across all vinyl cutters. The best choice is a machine that can work for your type of application so they don’t have to be the most expensive or fancy.

The way a vinyl cutter works is almost the same as a regular printer and most of the machine looks like one too. Chances are many people will think it is a printer while in fact it can be a vinyl cutter. What makes them different is that there is a small blade inside the machine. This blade is one of the factors that affect what material to be cut and the overall reliability of the machine. They need to be durable and sharp enough when dealing with thick material or very sharp when working on fragile sheets.

This blade is installed or attached on something which makes it removable. Usually your machine will come with at least one type of standard blade for quick start up but we can always buy other blades, especially from the same company since not all blades will fit all machines depending on the attachment type. Besides a blade, we can attach a pen as well and with this tool the machine will not cut but trace your design; it is drawing your pattern like a printer will.

To use the machine, depending on their mechanism it can be slightly different but in most cases you will need to load a design from the software they use whether it is from a smartphone or from a computer. It is pretty much like a printer and we can even manipulate the design in the software too. In some cases where the machine can scan as well, the user may be able to feed a design directly which is then copied by the machine’s software and pasted on another sheet or cut directly.

Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker Design

As you can see, they look like typical printers but have the fancier color scheme. The machines have openings in which they are identical but the machine itself is not the same. The ScanNCut has built-in software so it can be more convenient if you want to work directly. Side by side the Maker is slightly wider in comparison.

The Brother ScanNCut SDX125E is bulkier however as it is slightly taller and deeper. Both machines have a front opening that we can open to expose the cutting room and as expected, the material is fed from the front. When you open Maker’s upper and front cover, there is a set of buttons at the top right and a tool compartment on the opposite side. Brother has a small built-in display at the top and this is a touch-sensitive screen as well.

Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker Capacity

Now for the most important part, let’s see what the Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker can offer starting from the capacity since it is important to base your decision on. Just like most vinyl cutters, they are quite limited to 12 x 24 inches for the maximum cutting size or 12 x 12 inches when using the adhesive cutting mat that is available for each machine. The material thickness is up to 3 mm and 2.4 mm respectively so it means you can feed thicker material on ScanNCut.

Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker Software

These machines have their own software to work with and while it may sound unimportant, this is actually very crucial to decide whether we can use them with ease or not. In comparison Cricut is using Design Space while Brother has CanvasWorkSpace and in comparison, Cricut is probably the best in terms of providing intuitive software. It is uniquely sorting the different colors for you while for CWS we may need more time to get used to how they work but, they do get easier as we are familiar with the system.

What we actually prefer about Brother’s software is that you can use them for free. It doesn’t have the level of fonts, images, and designs available on Design Space but allows users to have freedom on importing and editing their design using other software.

Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker Features

As for the additional features on Brother ScanNCut SDX125E and Cricut Maker, we want to mention that Brother can scan directly from the machine. It is very similar to regular scanner so when you feed a material with design on it, the machine will capture this image. Without using smartphone or computer, we can cut, emboss, or draw the design directly from the built-in screen using stylus. You can do similar thing with Maker but we need other scanner and upload it into Design Space to print.
